This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a form of radical love concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.
