Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Squad to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the one-day international side following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a red-ball recall as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.

Pace Additions and Fitness News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
