‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light-based treatment is clearly enjoying a surge in popularity. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools for everything from complexion problems and aging signs along with muscle pain and gum disease, the latest being an oral care tool outfitted with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, boosting skin collagen, soothing sore muscles, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues while protecting against dementia.
Understanding the Evidence
“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” observes a neuroscience expert, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Artificial sun lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Types of Light Therapy
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application utilizes intermediate light frequencies, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.
Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and dampens down inflammation,” explains a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, in contrast to LEDs in commercial products (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “typically have shallower penetration.”
Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance
UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” says Ho. Essentially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue LEDs, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, enhance blood flow, oxygen absorption and skin cell regeneration, and activate collagen formation – an important goal for anti-aging. “Studies are available,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” In any case, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Many uncertainties remain.”
Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Unless it’s a medical device, standards are somewhat unclear.”

At the same time, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.
The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, but over 20 years ago, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I was pretty sceptical. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
Its beneficial characteristic, nevertheless, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.
Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is always very good.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
