Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
